What is "Tai Ko Tai"?
"Tai Ko Tai" is mobile phone that operates on the analog signal of the first generation of mobile communication network (1G). The name "Tai Ko Tai" is difficult to trace. It was said that the first martial arts actor that used this kind of mobile phone was Hung Kam Bo. As people usually called him "Tai Ko Tai", the mobile phone he used also got this name. On the other hand, Lion & Globe Peanut Oil produced a water bottle in the shape of a "Tai Ko Tai" as gifts in 1987. Therefore, "Tai Ko Tai" was also called "water bottle".
Different from fixed line telephone, mobile phone is a kind of telephone that the user can bring along to make and receive calls anywhere conveniently. Some people call it cell phone, handset, etc.
The first mobile phone was invented by Martin Cooper of Motorola in the U.S.. The phone was big in size, with a large battery and antenna inside. The fully charged battery was only enough for 30 minutes usage. It had no other function and the phone line could be easily tapped. Nonetheless, the emergence of mobile phone was as revolutionary as the invention of the first telephone by Alexander Bell in terms of the way it changed communication. In 1988, there were only 337 mobile phone subscribers when Macao launched the Analogue Mobile Telephone Service, using Total Access Communication System (TACS). At that time, having a mobile phone that cost as much as MOP30,000.00, was considered to be a status symbol.
