Sending and Receiving

Foundation of Communication > Sending and Receiving

Human civilizations and cultures are built through communication - the sharing of information and ideas. Starting with simple sounds and gestures, human beings developed languages so that they could send and receive messages.

All communication requires four practical steps: Coding, Sending, Receiving and Decoding.

  • Coding: Information and ideas in a message are coded into a language or series of symbols.
  • Sending: The language is processed for traveling through a medium, and transmitted.
  • Receiving: The transmitted message is received and converted back into language.
  • Decoding: The language is decoded to the original information and ideas.

Humans have a great ability to work together, to think collaboratively as a community, this is because of their ability to communicate – to send and receive complex messages.

One of the key steps in civilization was the development of public Postal and Telecommunications System around the world, allowing people to communicate reliably, economically, and as fast as the technologies of the times permitted.
