Feature Phone

Feature Phone

The second generation (2G) mobile phones operated on digital signals and were developed based on the standards of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). These kinds of function-based telephones did not support email transmission and other software. However, apart from the telephone and Short Message Sending (SMS) functions, some feature phones could support games.

The selling points of feature phone are its light weight and varieties. There were also different kinds of accessories available in the market, for example, ring tones, phone cases, phone straps, phone sleeves, etc, so that the users could mix and match to create their personalized mobile phones. The first GSM mobile phone, Nokia 1011, was launched in November 1992. In 1995, there were 5,499 GSM subscribers in Macao, and subscribers of TACS were maintained as over 30,382 that year.
