Sound can be stored as Digital files by Digital Sound Processing. WAV, CD and MP3 are common audio formats.

What is WAV?

WAV is a sound storage format used mainly on Personal Computers. It is useful for many kinds of sound. It works well for adding sound to games and other computing processes.

What is MP3?

MP3 is an electronic storage process and format, used mainly for music. Song files are compressed, but the sound quality is very close to CD quality. MP3 files pack a minute of music or several minutes of talk into 1 megabyte of storage.

MP3 files can be transferred over the internet easily.

What is a CD?

The Compact Disc (CD) is a medium for storing sound in a digital format. Sound data is digitized by sampling an Analog wave 44,100 times per second and filing the size of each sample as a binary number. These numbers, which are a digital signal, are then recorded as pits on the Compact Disc.

When playing back the CD, the digital signal is converted back to analog form by a D / A (Digital to Analog) converter.

The quality of a CD is very high because the information is stored digitally and there is no background noise.
