RADIO AND TV IN MACAO

  • In 1933, the first Radio Station in Macao, located in the Headquarters of Macao Post, began its 2 hours daily broadcasting until 1941, under the call signs CQN-MACAU and CRY-9-MACAU.
  • In 1938, Police Radio Station, by the Public Security Police, was launched, from the present Police Station No 2, near the Lin Fong Sports Centre, and it ran until 1941, under the call sign XX9-RÁDIO POLÍCIA.
  • In 1941, Macao Radio Club was created, inheriting equipment and installation of CRY-9-MACAU, and began broadcasting in Portuguese, Chinese and English.
  • In 1952, Radio Vila Verde, owned by Pedro José Lobo, was founded. The studios were situated in a private building, with the call signs CR9XL and CR9XM, and with programs in Cantonese and Portuguese. The broadcasting of Vila Verde was suspended in 1994, until its new operation started in 2002.
  • In 1962, Macao Radio Club was replaced by Macao Broadcasting Station, managed by an Orientation Committee. In 1973, its control was transferred to the Information & Tourism Center.
  • In 1982, TDM, a public enterprise was created to integrate the radio broadcasting. Until today, the Radio Channel provides services in both Cantonese and Portuguese. In May 1984, the Television Channel of TDM, officially started broadcasting, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., rotating between Portuguese and Chinese programs. In 1990, the broadcasting was divided into a Chinese and a Portuguese channel. In October 2009, TDM's Digital Broadcasting Channel was officially launched.
  • In 2000, a competition era of TV broadcasting began with several new service providers being introduced, like Macau Cable TV (MCTV) in 2000; Macau Lotus TV in 2002; the Chinese satellite channel of Macau Asia Satellite TV (MASTV) in 2004; and Great MacauTV (GMTV) joining Macao cable TV network in 2014. East Asia Satellite TV (EAST) started in 2001 but terminated its activity in April 2008.
  • In 2014, Macau Basic Television Channels, Ltd. was established to provide support services for residents to receive basic television channels.
