Communications Museum of Macao, 2010 - Electronic Device Construction Competition

Theme - "Automatic Basketball Shooting Device"

Design and produce an Automatic Basketball Shooting Device. By participating in this competition, students can make use of their knowledge of science through practical application.

Participants

All full-time secondary students of Macao can sign up for participation individually or in group (maximum 4 members per group). Each individual or group can only submit one piece of work.

  • Junior Secondary Group : Form 1 to Form 3 students
  • Senior Secondary Group : Form 4 to Form 6 students

Explanation Session

Submission & Deadline of Registration
  1. Submission: The completed Registration Form should be handed to the Museum. Alternatively, online registration can be made at http://macao.communications.museum.
  2. Registration Location & Opening Hours: Communications Museum - No.7, Estrada de D. Maria II, 09:30 - 17:30 on every Tuesday to Sunday.
  3. Deadline of registration: Before 17:30, January 10, 2010 (Sunday)
Judges

The Organizer, Communications Museum, will invite professionals to be the judges of the competition. The final result is subject to the decision of the judges.

Remarks

The annex is also part of this “Rules & Regulations” document. The Organizer reserves the right to interpret, explain or decide on any other issues not covered in the Regulations.

I. Place and Date of Competition
  • Communications Museum, at 14:00, February 6, 2010 (Saturday)
II. Rules of Competition
  1. Specifications
    1. Production materials and parts are not limited, but the device should use a 24V DC power supply or below. The Organizer will provide a household power supply of 220V/13A; batteries or transformers of unrestricted power should be prepared by the participants.
    2. All motions of the device must be controlled by a wired or wireless remote control with electric signals.
    3. The submitted device is able to be put inside the indicated area of 800 mm x 800 mm x 800 mm (Area P - Figure 1).
    4. Operational functions:
      • Junior Secondary Group: The device must consist of loading and shooting functions.
      • Senior Secondary Group: The device must consist of loading, shooting, shooting angle and direction controlling functions.
  2. Method
    1. Number of shots: A limit of 10 standard, 40 mm ping-pong balls provided by the organizer.
    2. Shooting distance and size of basket ring:
      • Junior Secondary Group: Please refer to Figure 1 for the installation positions of the basket ring and the device.
      • Senior Secondary Group: Please refer to Figure 1 for the installation positions of the device, the size and position of the basket ring will be announced during the competition.
      The height of shooting balls' trajectory cannot exceed to 2800 mm counting from the ground.
    3. Each participating group should assign a representative to participate in the draw procedure to determine the order of the competition.
    4. After evaluation by the judges, the devices that do not comply with the specifications will not be eligible to joining the shooting competition.
    5. The devices that comply with the specifications should be placed in the indicated position (Area P - Figure 1) and one minute is given for preparation. Thereafter, 10 ping-pong balls should be loaded and the group should wait for the instruction of the staff to start shooting.
    6. Each participating group should assign a representative to operate the device. The operation should be done within 15 minutes:
      • The Junior Secondary Groups can adjust the shooting angle manually, and then use the remote control to load and shoot the balls.
      • The Senior Secondary Groups must use the remote control to control all motions.
      The ending time is calculated when the last ball hits the ground or when the time limit is reached.
    7. During the competition, the device and all motions of the device must not exceed the indicated area (Area P - Figure 1). Otherwise, the shot will not be counted.
    8. Shooting criteria: Should refer to the rules of standard basketball shooting.
    9. After the shooting is completed, the required time and the number of valid shots are recorded. Shots that do not satisfy the shooting criteria will not be counted.
    10. Scoring: The group that has the highest number of valid shots will win. If the number of shots is the same, the one with valid goals and with the shortest time will win.
  3. Others
    • All participants should pay attention to electrical safety.
    • All participants should bring their own tools. No tools will be provided by the Organizer.
    • All participants are welcome to use the testing court in the Museum before the competition, during opening hours of the Museum.
III. Declaration
  1. All submitted entries may be exhibited in the Communications Museum. The Organizer reserves the rights to film, publish, translate, display and promote the entries without prior permission of the participants and remuneration.
  2. Personal data collected in the Application Form will only be used for the Competition, and for internal reference only.
