Electromagnetism

The Magnet and the Magnetic Field

Visitors can explore the properties of Magnets and observe the Magnetic Fields creating by different Magnets through the Alignment of Magnetic Needles.

Electromagnet

By cranking a generator connected to an Electromagnet, visitors can feel the force of the Electromagnet and understand how a Coil around an Iron Core would become a Magnet, when there is a Current flowing through the Coil.

Moving Coils and Electromagnetic Induction

Visitors can move three different coils of wire through a magnetic field. The coils are connected to a voltmeter. Visitors will see that the amount of electromotive force (e.m.f.) inducted in the circuit depends on the speed of movement, and the number of turns in the coils and the orientation of the coils.

Solenoid and Electromagnet

Visitors can activate a Solenoid to make it become an Electromagnet, they can use a Compass and Iron materials to verify the existence of the Magnetic Field, or place an Iron-filing Box close to the Solenoid to explore the distribution of its Magnetic Field.

Jumping ring

Visitors can activate this Exhibit to make a Ring jump upward. It is based on the Lenz Law that the Magnetic Field generated by the Induced Current tends to counterbalance the change in the Magnetic Field that induces the Current.
