Handling of Correspondence

Postal Activities > Handling of Correspondence

Local (Macao) correspondence, surface and airmail sent to all over the world are first handled separately by the staff at the Mail Exchange Centre:

  1. Local correspondence: sorted first and then directly distributed by the postman to the recipient's address.
  2. Outbound Correspondence: sorted by name of the Mail Exchange Office of destination, put into a Postbag and then closed for dispatch.

When the above two types of correspondence are collected from Pillar Boxes and Stamp Vending Machines, the staff of the Mail Exchange Centre must check the postage and cancel the stamps with the Postal Date Chop. Insufficient postage is stamped with a Postage Due Mark and the recipient must pay for the under-paid charges in order to collect the correspondence.

Correspondence collected from the Postal Stations can be sent directly for sorting as it has been checked for postage and cancelled with the Postal Date Chop upon acceptance for delivery. For items requiring special handling, such as Registration and Advice of Delivery, they will first be sent to the Registration Area for preparation of Registered Mail Advice.

Inbound Correspondence (destination Macao):

For the postbags containing surface or airmail, arriving in Macao via the Cargo Terminal at Inner Harbour, Macao Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and Macao International Airport, a Postal Datemark will be applied at the back of the envelope to indicate the Date of Arrival. After sorting, they can be directly distributed by the postman. Items that require special handling, such as Registration, Advice of Delivery and Postage Due items will be handled in the respective working areas before sorting.
